GPS Stuff

A holding place for misc stuff relating to GPS and Sat-Nav

Model Number Chipset Manufacturer Sensitivity
Nuvi 1200/1300/1400 SiRF*3 SiRF High **
Nuvi 200 Series ST Micro Cartesio STMicroelectronics High **
Nuvi 700 Series MTK MediaTek ???
Nuvi 3000 Series ??? ???? ???

** - Of course Garmin are going to say "high" - they are hardly going to say "buy this GPS with a 'moderately' sensitive reception!

The chipset in the Nüvi 3790T, 3790MLT, 3760T and 3750 are unknown at present.

Firmware update that provides MP3 capability for units that didn't have it factory installed

As far as I know there is no such thing as a firmware update that will allow a GPS that uses .wav files for its alarms (possibly through custom POI's) to be able to use MP3 files.

If MP3 files are converted to .wav format, and there are a lot of utilities to do this, they could be used for alarms. However, the ability to play MP3 files in their native form would require an MP3 player - this is not likely to be installed with a firmware update.

Currently, September 2009, the current Garmin line of GPS that have an MP3 player are the 7** series - including the 765T. The 2** 5** and the new 1200/1300/1400 series DO NOT - this includes the 255W, 1370T and 1250.

Mapsource for Windows 7 - Garmin

Using Garmin MapSource

Not that tells you on the box you bought your Nüvi - MapSource is the Garmin  program that runs on your PC with which you can enter, POI and Routes.

You will only get a copy of MapSource if the map pre-installed in your Garmin is eligible for a free update.

You can use MapSource to unlock maps and send them to your GPS - to do this you will need  to have the 25 digit "unlock" code.
